Multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs)

Multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) are designed to target HIV prevention as well as an additional indication such as preventing unintended pregnancies or transmission of other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection.  Delivery strategies under development include sustained release IVRs (27). While a ring with additional indications, such as preventing pregnancy, may increase uptake by reducing stigma normally associated with the use of specific HIV prevention modalities, MPTs manufacture is likely to be expensive and obtaining regulatory approval will be challenging due to the presence of two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients (27).  Please refer to the AVAC website for more information in MPTs (https://www.avac.org/prevention-option/multipurpose-prevention-technologies).
