Partner notification refers to the process of informing the sexual partners of a person living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (or other sexually transmissible infections (STIs)) that they are at risk of acquiring HIV or an STI, and they should seek testing and, if infected, treatment. Partners sharing injecting equipment may also be at risk of contracting HIV or viral hepatitis and all partners can be offered the opportunity to take HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), if contacted within 72 hours of the exposure. Until the partner is assessed as not having the infection, or until they are adequately treated, they should take precautions not to transmit their potential infection to others. The main purpose of partner notification is to notify partners who may be unaware of their risk, assess eligibility for HIV PEP, encourage them to have testing, and if they have the infection, to have ongoing treatment (1, 2).
