Integrating infection prevention and control (IPC) measures

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of strict infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in healthcare settings (8). Nurses have an important role in implementing IPC protocols to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and prevent nosocomial infections among patients, including HIV infection and potential exposure to Mpox (9). This requires standard precautions such as hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, and environmental disinfection to protect patients and healthcare workers alike (10).

In addition, nurses must collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop customised IPC strategies that meet the unique needs of HIV and Mpox patients (11). This includes implementing a cohort protocol to minimise cross-contamination, optimising ventilation systems to reduce airborne transmission, and ensuring appropriate isolation facilities for suspected or confirmed cases (12). By prioritising IPC initiatives, nurses can improve patient safety and prevent the spread of infectious diseases in healthcare.
